Ayurvedic Kizhi Treatment
Kizhi is a Malayalam word meaning “b a bag filled with”. Here the bag is filled with medicines. Kizhi is an Ayurvedic massage that is done with the help of small and warm bundles that may contain herbal powders and medicines, medicinal rice or sand. The treatment mainly includes the application of the bundles or pouches of medicinal herbs on affected areas of the patient body, followed by massage with hands.
By applying appropriate heat and pressure on the body, it helps the muscles to recover and boosts blood circulation. This absorbs the inflammation in the affected area thereby reducing muscle and joint pains.
Almost all medicines used in Ayurveda are derived and procured from the nature. It includes medicines used for oral consumption and also those used for treatments and external therapies. ‘Patra panda sweda’ or ‘ela kizhi’ is one of the best example wherein we use the herbal drugs or leaves of medicinal plants obtained from nature for external treatments, to heal pains and related conditions and strengthen and rejuvenate joints, muscles and soft tissues.
Ela or ila mens leaves, kizhi means bolus. Ela Kizhi is an ancient Ayurvedic sudation therapy using numerous medicinal leaves (Herbs). It induces perspiration within the affected area, which prompts the skin to eliminate wastes. Fresh leaves having vata pacifying properties make the herbal kizhis. These kizhis, dipped into warm Ayurvedic oils, will be used for massaging the body.
Most commonly used leaves are leaves of tamarind, catatropis gigentica, ricinus communis. drumstick, vitex nigundo, Adatoda vasica etc. they are chopped and mixed with grated coconut, lemon, turmeric, rock salt depending on the condition. The mixture is fried in plain sesame oil or other medicated oil as per the requirement. They are divided into four equal parts and tied in a linen cloth in the form of boluses.
